HeyCharge Connect MagicBox — a compact retrofit adapter that plugs into any OCPP-compatible EV charger
The HeyCharge Connect MagicBox: plug-in retrofit adapter for any OCPP-compatible wallbox.

HeyCharge, the Munich-based EV charging infrastructure company backed by Y Combinator and the European Innovation Council, today announced HeyCharge Connect — a new product line of retrofit adapters designed to add smart energy management to existing EV chargers. The first product in the line, the MagicBox, targets home EV owners and fleet operators, and will be made available to Easee customers across the DACH region as part of a strategic partnership between the two companies.

HeyCharge Connect adapters work as an intelligent bridge between a wallbox and the broader energy ecosystem. The MagicBox connects directly to any OCPP-compatible charger, connecting it to HeyCharge’s SecureCharge platform — no electrician visit, no firmware changes, no downtime. Installation is self-service: plug in, configure, and go.

Critically, the MagicBox operates with local, offline capabilities. Unlike cloud-dependent charging solutions that require reliable Wi-Fi coverage in garages and parking areas, the MagicBox functions independently — managing charging sessions, enforcing energy limits, and communicating with other devices over a local mesh network even when internet connectivity is unavailable.

What the MagicBox Unlocks

Once connected, the MagicBox transforms a basic wallbox into a fully integrated smart charging system. Key capabilities include:

Solar and tariff optimization. The MagicBox connects to rooftop PV systems and dynamic electricity tariffs, automatically scheduling charging sessions to maximize self-consumption and minimize cost.

Smart home integration. The MagicBox integrates with Home Assistant today, enabling coordinated energy management across the household — not just the charger. Broader smart home support via Matter, including Google Home and Apple HomeKit, is expected in the second half of 2026.

Dynamic load management. In properties with limited grid capacity, the MagicBox coordinates charging in real time — distributing available power automatically to avoid overloading the electrical connection. This works without cloud dependency, and no additional networking infrastructure is required.

In-vehicle access with Android Automotive OS. Through integration with Google’s Android Automotive OS, the MagicBox enables drivers to start and manage charging sessions directly from the vehicle’s infotainment system — no RFID card, no smartphone app required. This is particularly valuable for fleet and pool car environments, where individual driver credentials are impractical, and delivers the convenience of Plug-and-Charge without the associated infrastructure cost and complexity.

Regulatory compliance. The MagicBox supports compliance with 14a EnWG, Germany’s regulatory framework requiring grid operator control of large consumer devices such as EV chargers and heat pumps — an increasingly important requirement for both new and existing installations.

Company car reimbursement. For employees charging company or service vehicles at home, MagicBox enables precise session tracking and automated reimbursement reporting, powered by HeyCharge’s SecureCharge technology. Because SecureCharge operates locally without internet connectivity, it delivers secure, tax- and regulatory-compliant charger management even in garages and parking areas without Wi-Fi or cellular coverage — a use case already proven on the HeyCharge platform in commercial and multi-family residential deployments. Employers get auditable data; employees get paid for the energy they use.

Partnership with Easee

Easee, the Norwegian smart charging company, is the launch partner for the MagicBox. The device will be made available to Easee customers across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland as part of the partnership, extending the capabilities of existing Easee installations through HeyCharge’s intelligent software and connectivity layer. The collaboration enables customers to unlock additional value from their charging infrastructure, connecting it more seamlessly into the wider energy ecosystem without added complexity. Details on pricing and bundle options will be announced ahead of general availability.

“As the EV market matures, the conversation is moving beyond hardware alone. Customers are increasingly looking for solutions that connect charging into a wider energy ecosystem — from home energy management through to fleet reimbursement. Our partnership with HeyCharge allows us to extend the capabilities of existing installations, helping customers unlock more value from their infrastructure without added complexity. It’s a strong example of how we continue to support scalable, future-ready electrification across DACH.”

— Stephan Voigt, Regional Director DACH, Easee

“Home charging today is surprisingly disconnected. You buy a wallbox, bolt it to the wall, and that’s where the intelligence ends. The MagicBox changes that — it turns any OCPP charger into an active participant in your home’s energy system, whether that means following the sun on your roof, responding to grid signals, or simply making sure your car is ready when you are. And because it’s a retrofit device that works offline, it doesn’t matter if your garage has perfect Wi-Fi coverage or not.”

— Chris Carde, Founder & CEO, HeyCharge

“The fleet angle is where this gets really interesting. Companies already struggle with reimbursing employees who charge at home. Today, it’s either manual reporting or expensive dedicated hardware. The MagicBox gives them precise, auditable data from any OCPP wallbox — possibly one the employee already owns. And with Android Automotive OS integration, pool car drivers can authenticate and charge without carrying an RFID card or downloading yet another app. That’s a real operational simplification.”

Availability and Demonstrations

The MagicBox is expected to be available in Q2-Q3 2026. HeyCharge will be demonstrating the device live at Flotte! Der Branchentreff in Dusseldorf on March 25-26, 2026. HeyCharge and Easee will share a joint booth at the event. Attendees are invited to stop by for a hands-on demonstration of the MagicBox and the broader HeyCharge Connect product line.
